Truly, Madly, Nu Skin | Skincare Review

June 21, 2016 2 Comments

Change is good.
So, for the past month, I’ve switched out my regular skincare regime and am trying out the American brand –  Nu Skin.
Here’s what I thought of their products…

When it comes to my skincare regimen and basics, I’m stubborn as a mule.
After so many years of trials, errors, and an endless stream of both costly and embarrassing mishaps; I’ve finally come up with a fool-proof routine that never disappoints.

It’s been a long hard battle, but I’m pretty proud of the fact that I’m finally able to keep my acne (which runs in my family well into our dirty 30’s) at bay.
I’ve shared my skincare regime in the past, and even went as far to make a video on my old, neglected, youtube channel. After all, living in a tropical country like Thailand, which is clearly so far removed from England, will always inevitably spark some interest.

My dirty little secrets is this. Sometimes, I browse the beauty concessions at Sephora and wonder, what it’s be like to not over-think my regime. But just like the pimples, that I work hard to subdue, these thoughts are as quickly snuffed out as soon as they see the light of day.

How could I?

We can kid ourselves that it doesn’t matter, but flawless skin is everything for the modern woman.

Cue Nu Skin.

For the past couple of months my best friend Bee (adoseofb) has been raving on about this brand.
Born to that rare group of demi-gods and goddesses, with skin more flawless than a newborn baby seal pup, she hasn’t aged a day since we were 12.
So, when she tells you something is good – you listen.

Nu Skin Food

You know me. The way into my heart is through my stomach.

Age LOC me

This nifty machine takes customised skincare to a whole new level.

The event was for the launch of their much anticipated product – AgeLoc me, which in a nutshell provides personalised, targeted skincare from their ultra-scifi, ultra-sleek, travel-sized machine. The demo really did the trick for me, because clearly, the guys at Nu Skin have really taken the time to think of everything.

Somewhere, in between my fifth helping of some of their devilishly, tasty bites, provided by Con Gusto Catering, I remember thinking,
“… knowing me, it would definitely be something I could get into…”

I left with a more than generous goodie bag and decided to try out their products faithfully for a month…

Before I begin…

I just have to stress a few key factors:
1. I live in Thailand and travel around SE Asia, like I’m being chased by border patrol. So 9/10 times, something that works for me in London, due to the difference in climate and humidity, won’t work in Asia.
2. My skin, although combination, is still quite stressed. I haven’t quite decided whether it’s a good thing, but according to my dermatologist, I’m on the tail end of puberty. This means highly reactive skin and lots of spots from anything and everything.

Knowing that, I decided to start my new regime in London and continue it in Bangkok?

And that’s exactly what I did.

Pure Cleansing Gel (Oily/Combination Skin), 150ml, [UK Link | Thailand]

Nu SKin Gel and Clarisonic

This wonderfully light, no tears cleanser should be a staple for all bathroom cabinets.
I’ve been using it two ways: the first is to apply a pea sized amount all over my damp face, and gently massage in circular motions, then rinse it off. The next was to use it with my Clarisonic Aria, in the evenings for a deeper clean.
What I loved about it was that it melts away makeup, but without leaving a residue, or leaving your skin feeling like parchment paper. I especially loved the light fragrance which was pleasant and didn’t linger.

Price: 4/5
Given how much I’ve forked out for my Dermalogica over the years, this is certainly cheaper.

Packaging: 3/5
It’s no frills and simple, which I personally love; but may not be to everyone’s taste.

Overall: 4/5
Although I would never think of using this as my principle cleanser, it’s a great handy thing to have for those days when your skin is feeling a bit worse for wear and stressed. I took a little sample on to my flight and it really did me a world of good. I would definitely repurchase this cleanser again.

ph Balance Mattefying Toner (Oily/Combination Skin), 150ml, [UK Link | Thailand]

Nu Skin Toner

There was a time when I gave up on toners, then I discovered this.
In London, it was a satisfying skin refresher but it really does come into it’s own in Bangkok. The humidity and heat here, means that immediately after I cleanse, my skin decides to pile on layer of grease on to my skin – immediately. This phenomenon, in the past, occurs regardless of the cleaner or toner I use, so I just gave up on splashing out on the stuff. This toner, however, balances the oiliness of skin, provides that extra level of clean, but doesn’t strip my skin. I like to keep mine in the fridge and it feels marvellous.

Price: 4/5
Considering how addicted I’ve become to this, the price is definitely a steal.

Packaging: 3/5
Like the cleanser, it simple and to the point. The bottle has a bit of give, so I can see myself being able to get every last drop out of it, should it come to that.

Overall: 4/5
I’m very impressed with this product. Considering the fact that I didn’t even know that I was looking for a toner, I’m amazed at how I ever lived without it.

Moisture Restore Day (Oily/Combination Skin), 50ml, [UK Link | Thailand]

I really wanted this moisturiser to work for me.
It didn’t.
While I was in London, it felt great but I noticed that it didn’t really sit well under my make-up. When I eventually got back to Bangkok, it was a nightmare. I broke out several times, gave it the benefit of the doubt, stopped, started again, only to go admit defeat. My skin just doesn’t want it at present.

Price: 2/5
It’s costly for something that didn’t really work well for me.

Packaging: 4/5
The cool pump means you’re not dipping your fingers into it, or wasting a lot of it, which I really appreciated.

Overall: 2/5
As much as I would have loved to rave about this product it didn’t quite agree with me. Knowing my skin, in a couple of months, I’ll unearth it from the back of my bathroom cabinet and this will be all it will crave. I suspect that the breakouts I experienced were probably just teething issues, so I’m not entirely ruling it out for the future.

ageLOC Tru Face Essence Ultra, 60 capsules, [UK Link | Thailand]

There’s no such thing as too early to start a concrete anti-ageing regime.
These little capsules deliver patented technology that leave your skin feeling smoother and looking firmer. You simply twist the top part of the little capsules and massages the royal-jelly-like liquid all over the face and neck.
For me, it was very rich and I could only really try it at night once a week. However, it did leave me with ultra-soft skin that I couldn’t stop touching.

Price: 2/5
To keep this particular decadent habit, I might have to rob a bank.

Packaging: 4/5
Encased in a class bottle, this feels a lot more grown up than the cleaner and the toner, but still holds true to the simplistic design that I actually love about the brand.

Overall: 2.5/5
As decadent as I felt applying it, I don’t really think it’ll make it’s way into my repertoire of products.
I gave a few capsules to the German, who has much more mature and drier skin and he absolutely loved it. He’s taken to nicking a few whenever I’m not looking, so clearly this product works, for those with concerns about ageing skin.

Final Verdict:

My love affair with Nu Skin has just begun.
After a month of faithful use, my skin is not only soft and radiant but (more importantly) still spot free. I don’t have to use harsh cleansers or skin-stripping products and lately, I’ve been getting a lot of compliments about my glowing skin.
Imagine my excitement to discover that they handle everything from cleansers to body scrubs, toothpastes to room fragrances. I’m determined to try it all. Expect more posts about this brand.

If you’d like to know more, or have any experiences to share, feel free to leave me a comment.
